Many applications with huge potential
Today, contactless cards are massively deployed in the world in many sectors: public transport, access control and payment cards:
- In France, 6 millions of contactless cards are used in urban transportation, half of it in Ile de France. At the same time, contactless payment cards begin to spread.
- In North America, most banks have adopted this technology in their cards. At the end of 2007, there were more than 30 million contactless cash cards on the market.
Contactless mobile services are already a reality in Japan where NTT DoCoMo launched in 2004 a complete commercial offer (bank, loyalty, conveyance…). By the end of 2007, 48 million contactless mobile phones had been sold in Japan.
Four years after the market introduction of contactless mobile phones, Japanese mobile phone users have massively adopted this technology. Thanks to their ease of use, mobile NFC services provide an attractive complement or alternative to contactless card services. It really makes every day life easier. Such services have also been launched in South Korea.
Many trials have been conducted in the rest of the world: US, Europe (France, UK, Germany, Spain, and Holland), Middle East and Asia (China in particular). These experiments tested several applications of the technology: payment, smart posters, public transport, event ticketing…
